March 2017 | Learning to Love and Forgive
March is a crazy month of the year for a lot of families. Just when you feel like you are into a regular routine, you have spring break, sports schedules starting, a time change, getting ready for the STARR test, all while trying to get plans in place for the summer, and oh ya – grandma’s birthday needs to happen too.
With everything going on it can be easy to let the busyness take over your family and forget to treat each other with respect. Often times we are quickest to forget to love those closest to us and then ask for forgiveness when we mess up. So this month in Vista Kids, we are focusing on loving others through forgiveness.
In the Block this month, we’re working to build into kids a love for others. Imagine if your preschooler loved their brother, sister, and friend in the same way that Jesus loves us. What a wonderful world that would be! That’s what we want for our preschoolers this month. Our memory verse this month is John 13:34, “Love one another.” and our bottom line is I can love everyone. Each story will focus on a way to show love to others in ways like being a helper, sharing whether you have a lot or a little, forgiving others when they mess up, and asking for forgiveness when you mess up.
Here’s how we will teach our preschoolers that they can love everyone:
Week 1: The story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37)
Week 2: The story of the Rich Fool (Luke 12:16-21)
Week 3: The Widow’s Offering (Mark 12:41-44)
Week 4: The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-24)
It’s going to be a great month of teaching our preschoolers to have the mindset that “I can love everyone.”
In Wired, we are learning all about Forgiveness – deciding that someone who has wronged you doesn’t have to pay.
When our relationship with God was broken beyond repair, God offered His only Son as the way to forgive us and restore the broken relationship.
Since we are created in God’s image, we have the ability to offer forgiveness when the people in our lives hurt us. God’s love in us makes it possible for us to forgive others and work towards fixing our own relationships that break down from time to time. God showed us just how much He cares about forgiveness when He made the ultimate sacrifice and sent Jesus to pay the price for our sin. While sin separates us from God, He offers grace and forgiveness as a gift for us to receive. We have been forgiven of so much, it’s only right that we turn to those in our lives and offer forgiveness to them in return.
Our Memory Verse for March comes from Colossians 3:13.
“Put up with one another. Forgive one another if you are holding something against someone. Forgive, just as the Lord forgave you.” (NIV)
This verse reminds us not only that God forgave our sins, but also that we should forgive others instead of holding grudges against one another.
Here’s how we will learn about forgiveness this month:
Week 1: The Lost Sheep (Luke 15:1-7) | God forgives you
Week 2: The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-14) | Everyone needs to be forgiven, even me
Week 3: The Older Brother (Luke 15:21-32) | When you don’t forgive, you miss out
Week 4: The Unmerciful Servant (Matthew 18:21-35) | Since God forgave you, you should forgive others
I hope that you and your family will join us at Vista in March as we learn what it means to love and forgive those around us. Make the month of March one where your family practices forgiveness in every situation.
